The Toothbrush: Before Colgate
As early as 3000 BC, people used chew sticks to clean their teeth. These chew sticks were small branches, chewed to clean the teeth much as dogs chew on hard rawhide or bones. In many countries chew sticks are still in use!
The modern toothbrush originated in China in the 15th century, constructed of hog’s hair and attached to bone handles. Later, in Europe, wealthy people would use soft horsehair brushes and brass toothpicks to keep their teeth clean.
Animal activists will be relieved to note that in the 19th century that toothbrush bristles made of animal hair fell out of favor. Today, we use a much more effective and hygienic alternative: nylon bristles.
Teeth Whitening and You
Today, dental hygiene has come a long way. We can enjoy healthy teeth and gums well into old age if we are diligent about dental checkups and care. Over time, however, the color of our teeth can turn yellow or grey, necessitating teeth whitening.

Teeth whitening is also known as tooth bleaching or dental bleaching. One of the most popular methods is Zoom! Teeth whitening. The Zoom! System follows up the dental cleaning with a peroxide whitening gel, then a specialized LED light to activate the whitening agents in the gel. It all takes just one hour and delivers immediate results.
